Two years ago the Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida, launched an exhibition called Disney and Dalí: Architects of the Imagination. As part of it Goodby Silverstein & Partners created the Dreams of Dali virtual reality (VR) experience focused on the artist’s famous 1935 painting Archeological Reminiscence of Millet’s “Angelus”. In the summer of 2017 VRFocus reported on plans to bring the VR content to a wider audience, with Dreams of Dali now available for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift.

Dreams of Dali

Dreams of Dali transports you inside the famous painting, allowing you to immerse yourself in the world of the Surrealist master like never before. You’ll be able to venture into the bizarre towers, heading all the way to the top to peer into the distance and if you look hard enough, discover surprises around every corner. “We imagine Dali himself, known in his lifetime as what we now call an “earlier adopter” of new technology, would applaud this inspiring homage to his 1935 painting,” siad the development team in a statement.

Having been available at the museum for a couple of years, the experience has garnered visitor acclaim and international recognition, winning industry awards including the prestigious Cannes Cyber Lion GOLD; a Webby People’s Voice award; and a Facebook Silver award for Innovation, among others.

Dreams of Dali launched first via Oculus Home for Oculus Rift last week, arriving today on Steam for HTC Vive as well. Whichever platform you download it from, Dreams of Dali is free on both. Samsung Gear VR, Google Daydream and Google Cardboard are also supposed to be getting Dreams of Dali at some point, currently the developers haven’t said when.

The exhibition featuring Dreams of Dali is still ongoing if you happen to be travelling to Florida. The museum is open daily from 11am-4pm (until 8pm on Thursdays), and Dreams of Dali is complimentary with admission to the Museum. The last passes for the day are given out at 3:30pm (and 7:30pm respectively) and seating is limited. For any further updates on the experience, keep reading VRFocus.
